COMPASS Makers Space residency in Tranås
Emerging choreographers Emma Östlund and Daniela Carler have been selected as artists in residence for the very first COMPASS residency in Tranås, hosted by Kultivera and supported by Region Jönköping. Emma and Daniela will work on their solo performances and present excerpts at the end of the residency period. During the residency they will be supported in their process and mentored by Stina Nilsson and Lee Brummer.
Emma Östlund
Emma Östlund (she/her) is a Swedish dance-artist who's working in the dance fields of Sweden, Denmark and Germany. In 2023 she graduated from SOZO – Visions In Motion in Germany and has since then done work with MuteComp Physical Theatre, La Macana and Vittra Dance Collective. Her current choreographic interests lie around the themes of delusion/illusion and reality/fantasy, often with a hint of irony and comedic touch. She likes to work with high physicality: challenging the border between dance and theatre as well as the playfulness/seriousness of the present moment.
During the residency she will dive into her solo practice “SCORE”, which came out of the sudden interest of a practice which she has no previous experience in; football. By coincidence, she became very fascinated about the way footballers move on the field, and how the psychological states of the players affect the physicality of their bodies. Her expectations for the residency is to try out many different tasks and ideas to see how she in different ways can challenge her physicality, artistic vision and mental boundaries, as well as to continue on exploring what happens when football meets dance.
Daniela Carler
“Through this residency, I expect to develop ‘landScapeS’, an ongoing research that will lay the ground for a new creation for 3-4 dancers. ‘landScapeS’ is inspired by the both perennial and ephemeral nature of landscapes and questions the body as a performative tool, exploring performativity and the dancing body. It looks at the body as a tool of change and metamorphosis, at internal and external shifts, at temporality and at space as scenography. It brings questions of architecture, the use of immobility and movement and seeks to continuously challenge existing relations.
Further, 'landScapeS' is for me a dance practice I want to offer professionals as well as amateurs, potentially creating spontaneous performances as well as a theatre piece. I will be diving deeper into it as a solo research to begin with, clarifying how to transmit it to other performers and starting to establish more precise choreographic ideas. At this stage, leading a workshop for local dance students and showing a work-in-progress performance would be very beneficial as these two pillars represent the research I am doing. This is one of the reasons I am excited about this opportunity. Receiving mentorship from ilDance would allow the project to take on new dimensions and for me to lead it towards its full potential. At the end of the residency, I aim to have developed a more precise choreographic language for ‘landScapeS’, have a solo performance version, video material and much creative information and inspiration from working alongside two other artists.
As an artist, I enjoy interacting with dance makers and artists from different horizons and have started collaborations with artists I have met spontaneously through festivals or residencies. I have worked a lot solo in my artistic research and creation processes and would benefit from working alongside another emerging dancer and choreographer. Working alongside Stina Nilsson, who I met earlier this year, would also support the research as I feel there are similarities in our practices worth diving deeper into and discussing.
This residency would offer me support as a choreographer, allowing me to develop that part of my artistry further and make space for new choreographic ideas.”
