What Compass means for Supporters

COMPASS is an initiative from ilDance which aims to ignite change in the current Swedish contemporary dance ecosystem and society and become a home for young and emerging (YEA) contemporary dance artists across Sweden.

The project was initiated by ilDance 2021, with the support from Postkodstiftelsen for its first two years of operation, to offer a much-needed mechanism and infrastructure that drives the production and presentation of contemporary dance with and by young dance artists throughout Sweden.

ilDance will work with a wide range of organisations, stakeholders and individuals throughout Sweden to create stimulating and dynamic environments where young dance artists can be supported.

COMPASS will operate within a network of local hubs across the country, beginning with five hubs and expanding in the future. 

Instead of being physical places, hubs are based on the declaration of intent of local partners to involve local young and emerging artists in the local community's organic cultural and social life, while acknowledging the importance of supporting local future generations of creatives and artists. 

This means that there are no strict commitments about specific resources or specific ways of collaborating. COMPASS welcomes fluid, mixed, developing and flexible collaborations where partners can choose when, how and how much they can and want to contribute to COMPASS in their local communities

Through COMPASS, supporters will be offered consultation and support to find opportunities and ways to involve and integrate young and emerging artists as well as identifying opportunities to enrich the activities and operations of local partners by opening their doors to local young and emerging artists.

COMPASS will focus on diversification and enhancement of creative opportunities for emerging artists outside the metropolitan areas.

This initiative will see us support and assist cultural workers, stakeholders, institutions, municipalities and regional governments in acquiring and developing knowledge around producing and presenting contemporary dance by emerging artists.

Local partners in the hub can range from regional cultural departments, municipalities, libraries, cinemas, museums, galleries, gyms, people's houses, schools, private companies or anywhere community life happens or there is a desire to contribute.
